Chicago Regional Volunteer Opportunities

The Chicago Area Regional Competition has begun and we are actively looking for volunteers to help serve as a mentor or judge for the event.  Prejudging of the computer cities and essays has changed from previous years - see update mentioned below.  Preliminary judging of the presentations will be conducted the day of the competition on Saturday January 7th 2017.

Please review the possible list of judging areas below.  Click on the area link for the opportunity that you would like to pursue and add your name with contact information to the e-mail.   Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Preliminary Judge:  Serve as a preliminary model and presentation judge for student's diorama model and presentation on the day of the competition at UIC.  The judging will go from 8 a.m. to Noon. You will be asked to arrive early for a small training session and instructions on how to judge.  When redirected to the Future City enrollment page, select "Enroll to be a judge" from the top 3 choices and then select "Model and Presentation Judge" from the 6 available choices.

Essay and Computer Model Judge:  We are looking for individuals who can help with Pre-judging for essays abstracts and Sim City Computer models.  In the past, this has occured the Saturday before the competition at HNTB's Chicago office, however this year we will be conducting this activity remotely.  Essays and computer models will be e-mailed out (along with free copy of SimCity software!) to those who will be able to judge.  When redirected to the Future City enrollment page, select "Enroll to be a judge" from the top 3 choices and then select "Computer Design Judge" if you wish to judge the student's Sim City Models and "City Description Judge" if you would like to review and judge the student's description essay.

Mentor: Work with a student team to build their model and prepare for the competition.  We need engineers from all over the Chicago region to work with the students.  See a google map with registered schools noted that are still looking for a mentor.

Competition Support Volunteer: Serve as support the day of the competition at University of Illinois at Chicago Student Center East.  Tasks consist of helping schools get registered, assisting with model transport, set-up, clean-up, and distribution of prizes.

Special Awards Judge: Select which teams meet the criteria for a Special Award on morning of the competition.  Most of the special award sponsors typically provide judges but we are always looking for extra help with these judges.
