Florida (North East) Sub-Region

Regional Coordinator: Carmen Polanco

Welcome to the North East Regional Future City Competition:
Inspire the Future:
Form a Future City Team

This is our first year as a sub-region tot he Tampa-Bay Region. Our goal is to use this powerful tool that strengthens students’ 21st century skills, teaches them citizenship, motivates them to study math and science, and introduces them to potential careers to introduce them to the wonders of math and science.

·Each year 6th, 7th and 8th grader students embark on a transformational experience as they ask and answer the question—How can we make the world a better place? From this simple starting point, student teams imagine, design, and build cities of the future.

What is Future City?

The Future City Competition is a project-based learning experience where student teams, led by an educator and volunteer mentor, spend four months:

     · Designing a virtual city (using SimCity),

     · Researching and designing a city wide issue (this year’s challenge—Feeding Future Cities—asks students to design a          way to grow enough of one protein crop and one vegetable crop in their city to feed all of their citizens, and

     · Building a scale model of their city using recycled material.

In January teams present their vision to a panel of volunteer judges. After the competition is over, student participants are not only prepared to be citizens of today’s complex and technical world, they are poised to become the drivers of tomorrow.

Registered organizations receive free access to the SimCity gaming platform, a program handbook, detailed assessment rubrics, and in-person and online tranining opportunities. The top two teams will travel to the Tampa Regional Competiton for the finals. THe 1stst place team from each region receives airfare and hotel accommodations to compete at Nationals.

We think you’ll enjoy it, too! Last year, 92% of educators said they’d recommend Future City to a colleague!
