Future City is an important way to change the face of engineering

Cavon Cormack is the Programs Coordinator for the Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) program at National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Cavon had the opportunity to be a judge at the 2016 Future City Finals, where he represented NSBE. It was his first time being part of the competition and he was impressed. “I was blown away by these future leaders. They all had a great attitude and I was impressed by their pro-social mindset while building their cities.”
Though he liked seeing the models, his favorite part of the competition was the Q&A section with the students. “I really enjoyed hearing their thinking behind the design and what led them to making decisions. The students were able to show off many skills during the competition from public speaking, to city planning, problem solving and design. That is what makes this program is so unique!”
Cavon says it’s important for organizations likes NSBE to be involved with Future City. “We want to increase diversity and change the face of engineering. It’s a great opportunity for kids from all backgrounds, including underrepresented communities. A lot of these kids might have never before met someone who works in the field – Future City can open their eyes to a career they never knew about.”
