"Groundbreaking" Future City team

Carole Sand, a teacher at Decorah Middle School in Iowa, is entering her fifth year in the Future City Competition, after switching over from Future Problem Solvers. My students really enjoy the hands-on aspect of the project, and they love building the city models.” Carole calls the switch “the best decision she ever made in education.”

Carole says, “being involved in the Future City Competition has taught me how to be a facilitator and has shown how much more responsibility the students take for their own learning when you take on the facilitator role, rather than the traditional teacher role.”

Last year, one of Carole’s teams continued working after the competition and spent months researching ways a new Fairfield Inn coming to their town could be more sustainable. “The developers came to our room and the team presented their visions: solar panels, electric charging stations, eco-friendly room amenities, recycling program, and reduced breakfast waste. The developers are considering the team’s suggestions and have invited the team to their groundbreaking ceremony later this month.”

“My students love Future City. They can’t wait to get the theme each year, they research over the summer and are so excited to get their groups formed and see what they create together.”
