Future City Team from Minnesota Presents their Ideas to Architecture Firm
The Future City team Kjiojin Limani from St. Francis of Assisi School recently presented their “Power of Public Space” design to RSP Architects and the Heart of the City design team in Rochester, MN.
The Heart of the City sub-district serves as a focal point of Rochester’s downtown area and is being redesigned as a public space where the Mayo Clinic, commercial, hospitality, retail and residential connect. When RSP Architects learned that local students participated in a national competition with a public space theme, they immediately wanted to meet the kids, see their city model, and hear their ideas and insight on public spaces.
The students met with the RSP Architects and the design team downtown where the model of their city, Kjiojin Limani, was displayed in a conference room along with designs for the Heart of the City. Dennis Schreiber, an educator at St. Francis of Assisi School, has been involved with the Future City Competition since it began there. He was excited that the students saw how their futuristic designs could apply to real life. “The kids wowed the architects with their design and knowledge of public spaces. The students had a lot of suggestions for the new space being designed including more green space and even a hoverboard park!”
The Future City program has been a staple at St. Francis for 12 years. During that time, it has inspired several student participants to enter careers in architecture and engineering, which is why the program continues to be so successful in the area.
