Newtopia is heading to DC!

It was a beautiful Saturday as the 27 well-prepared teams arrived the New England Regional Finals. With a new coordinator, Alyson Stuer, and in a new home, Watertown Middle School, there was an incredible energy in the building as the students discussed their cities, their plans for being resilient in the event of a natural disaster, ans a whole broad range of concepts they have researched for the competition.
The top 3 teams were selected to present before the full crowd in the final round. The 3 were Newtopia, Peluang and Silver Bay. We are very proud of the team that will represent New England this year in Washigton DC: Newtopia from the Derby Academy in Hingham. The students are Axel F, Colin F, and Penelope T. CONGRATS!!!

The team's teacher, Kathleen Malone was named 2017 Teacher of the Year and praised the Future City Competition at the Massachusetts STEM Summit during her acceptance speech, which played a significant role in the growth of the New England Regional program.
Run by the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section of ASCE and sponsored by a long list of companies, over 50 volunteers were on hand to run the day's events at which an estimated 300 people were present. Kate Bowe, a chemical engineer who was on a Future City team that went to the National Finals a decade ago, ran hands-on activities during the scoring times between final rounds. Alicia DiCecca ran all the scoring, as she has for many years. Michael Littman did a wonderful job coordinating with the teachers and Sofia Puerto did an equally great job coordinating the volunteers. It takes a huge team to run the competition: Sainey Badjie has been posting updates all year about the competition and will be traveling to DC with the team. Bryan and Kristen Paul have been helping run the competition for years, Alex Bonnar, who runs the Ralph Salvucci online bridge design contest, and Jim Velino, who runs the BSCES Model Bridge Competition that will take place the day before the Patriots win Superbowl LIII (at Wentworth Institute of Technology -- the bridge contest, not the Superbowl), have also played a large role for years. Betsy Schwartz and Josh McGinn have also served major roles in making the day happen.
