American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado Scholarship and Education Foundation – Roles of Engineers in a City
  • Name some different types of engineers that would have contributed to building your city.
  • Assuming that you are one of these engineers, talk about your job.
  • What are some types of renewable energy that engineers could use to power buildings in your floating city?
  • How is renewable energy better than using fossil fuels to power your city?
ASCE Denver – Dream Big
  • Can you give us a brief overview of your project and how you designed your floating city?
  • How did this project make you think differently about city design?
  • What was the most creative part of your project? What did you enjoy the most?
  • How will you implement what you presented in this project in your daily life?
Hartigan Power Equipment – City With the Best Power Supply System
  • What types of power sources are used in your city?
  • What is the consistency of your power supply system?
  • Can you explain how the electrical power is distributed to your city residents, commercial, and industrial areas, keeping in mind that you may have to covert high-voltage electricity to lower voltages suitable for distribution?
  • Can you provide a simple explanation of a microgrid? What does a microgrid do, and what is its purpose?

  • What are the main means of transportation used in your Future City for all residents?
  • What special types of transportation are provided for at-risk residents, bearing in mind physical and mental limitations?
  • By what means and how quickly can emergency services access your city’s residents? If outside help is needed, how do you provide this?
  • What types of energy sources are used in your city’s transportation system and vehicles?
NCEES – Best Land Surveying Practices
  • When you were planning and building your city model, did you perform any duties of a surveyor?
  • Did you create a base map, or detailed 2D map, to design your city before creating the 3D model?
  • Did you use a grid pattern on your plan/map to develop your model? Did you build to scale?
  • When building your model, did you follow the measurements from your plan/map to position your buildings and roads?
  • Did you use satellite/aerial imagery in your research to help develop your city?
PMI – PMIEF Outstanding Project Management Award

Questions will surround the following topics:

  • The team clearly identified a specific goal, problem, or objective they wanted to address
  • The team created a plan of action to address the issue(s) and outlined steps to accomplish these (i.e. established leadership roles, a communication strategy, planning meetings, etc.)
  • The team exhibited the ability to work within agreed budgets, project timelines, and had a system to stay organized
  • The team demonstrated an ability to address challenges and asked reflection questions based on the project
SRK Consulting – Best Plan for Locally Sourced Building Materials
  • Are you getting the building materials from a nearby (local) source?
  • Where will you find the materials your city needs to build and grow? (for example, from the seafloor, the mainland, from seawater)
  • Have you used any renewable or recycled materials and were there any challenges with using these sources?
  • Is there a cool benefit from using your local materials for the people living in your city?
WGI – Best City Infrastructure
  • What is the most unique feature of your city’s transportation infrastructure?
  • What is the fastest way to get from one side of your city to the other?
  • How does the setup of your city’s residential, commercial, and industrial areas create an ideal environment for your residents to live?
  • How does your city’s water supply and wastewater disposal system work to keep water clean for your residents?
WTS – The WTS Award for Focus on Education in Design
  • What does a classroom look like in your city?
  • What does the curriculum look like in your schools?
  • How do students get to and from school in this city?
  • What did you incorporate into your design to promote student equity?
